A baseball crosses the edge of the strike zone. The umpire calls it a ball. The catcher taps his helmet, twelve cameras check the pitch, and the call changes before the next batter has time to settle in.
I’ve spent 25 years in technology and entrepreneurship. The more I watch automated officiating move into professional and recreational sports, the less interested I am in whether machines can make a call. The harder question is what we still need a human official to DO after the machine measures it.
Ball tracking is faster. Electronic line calling is more consistent. Video systems can verify positions, contact points, timing, and rule boundaries that the human eye was never designed to process at full speed.
That conclusion mistakes fewer measurable calls for less human authority.
The job is moving up the decision chain.
Technology is not eliminating the official. It is stripping away the easiest part of officiating and leaving the human with the decisions that are harder to define, harder to explain, and much harder to defend.
The Machines Have Taken the Lines
Professional tennis gives us the clearest version of the automated future.
The ATP mandated live electronic line calling across its events beginning in 2025. The 2026 ATP rulebook is blunt: there are no line umpires, and the approved system calls every line. Foot faults can be monitored by a review official using court-level cameras, with the chair umpire stepping in when needed.
Wimbledon followed in 2025, replacing line judges across its match courts. By 2026, tournament scoreboards were also showing visual indicators for automated “out” and “fault” calls.
That removes one of the oldest visible officiating jobs in sport.
It does not remove officiating.
The chair umpire still manages scoring, player conduct, interruptions, medical situations, timing, communication, and the match itself. The ATP rulebook also contains a very human contingency: if electronic line calling fails to make a call, the chair umpire must decide. If the system cannot be restored within 15 minutes, a tour supervisor determines how the match will continue.
The machine owns the boundary.
The human owns the consequences.
Baseball Chose a Middle Ground
Major League Baseball could have handed every ball and strike to an automated system in 2026.
It did not.
MLB introduced the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System instead. The home-plate umpire still makes the initial call. A pitcher, catcher, or batter can challenge by immediately tapping a cap or helmet. Twelve Hawk-Eye cameras track the pitch, the result appears on the stadium screen and broadcast, and the call is confirmed or overturned in roughly 15 seconds. Each team begins with two challenges and keeps successful ones.
That design is more revealing than full automation would have been.
MLB decided that accuracy was not the only value worth preserving. It kept the umpire’s first judgment, gave players control over when to question it, and turned the challenge itself into a strategic decision.
The system measures where the ball crossed a two-dimensional strike-zone plane. It cannot decide whether a catcher should save a challenge for the ninth inning. It cannot read a pitcher’s confidence, understand the count, or determine whether a player genuinely saw an error or is reacting emotionally.
The camera settles the pitch.
The people still manage the game.
Football Shows Where Measurement Ends
Offside looks like a perfect automation problem.
Track the players. Track the ball. Identify the moment of contact. Compare body positions. Send the result.
FIFA’s advanced semi-automated offside system at the 2026 World Cup used player tracking, connected-ball data, and digital player models to speed up positional offside decisions. Clear positional offsides could be sent directly to the officials on the field. FIFA also stated a limit that matters: the system would not decide whether an offside player interfered with play without touching the ball.
That is not a technical gap.
It is a judgment gap.
A machine can identify where a player was standing. It has a much harder time deciding whether that player blocked a goalkeeper’s view, distracted a defender, affected an opponent’s movement, or gained an advantage in a way that satisfies the law.
The International Football Association Board still gives the referee full authority to enforce the laws and make decisions according to both the written rules and the “spirit of the game.” Its VAR protocol says the referee must make the original decision, only the referee can initiate a review, and the final call remains with the referee.
Position is data.
Interference is interpretation.
More Technology Has Not Ended the Arguments
The promise behind officiating technology was simple: fewer mistakes should mean fewer disputes.
The 2026 World Cup did not work that way.
Advanced offside systems produced faster factual decisions, but VAR expanded into more match-changing situations. Reuters reported that the tournament’s VAR interventions quickly exceeded the totals from the 64-game World Cups in both 2018 and 2022, while critics argued that the technology had moved from correcting obvious mistakes into inconsistent overreach.
That is the problem nobody solves by adding another camera.
A replay can show contact from six angles. It cannot create universal agreement about whether the contact was careless, reckless, tactical, accidental, or serious enough to change a match.
Slow motion can make ordinary contact look violent. A wide angle can reveal context, while a close-up removes it. One frame can establish where a foot landed without showing the speed, force, intention, or sequence that produced it.
The better the evidence becomes, the more responsibility moves to the person interpreting it.
The human referee is no longer defending what they thought they saw.
They are defending what the evidence means.
Someone Has to Handle the Exception
Automated systems look inevitable until they fail in public.
During Wimbledon in 2025, electronic line calling was mistakenly deactivated on part of Centre Court during a match between Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sonay Kartal. A ball that landed clearly out was not called, and the tournament later attributed the incident to human error. In another match, the system interpreted a rally ball as a serve and produced an incorrect fault call, forcing the chair umpire to order a replay.
Those were not arguments about whether the camera could see the line.
They were failures of configuration, workflow, and exception handling.
Every automated officiating product eventually reaches the same point. A camera loses sight of the ball. A sensor disconnects. Two players overlap. A system applies the wrong game state. The software produces no result, conflicting results, or a result that makes no sense to everyone watching.
At that moment, the sport needs a person with authority.
Not someone standing nearby to make the product feel safer.
Someone trained to stop play, explain the problem, apply the fallback rule, control the players, and take responsibility for what happens next.
That may become the most important officiating skill of all.
The Referee Still Protects the Match
A ball-tracking system does not notice that a player is disoriented.
A line-calling camera does not separate two athletes before an argument becomes a fight.
A rules engine does not feel the atmosphere changing after a dangerous tackle, repeated taunting, deliberate delay, or escalating retaliation.
Officials manage safety, behavior, timing, advantage, substitutions, outside interference, medical stoppages, and communication. In football, the referee decides whether play should continue after an offence because the non-offending team may benefit. The referee also controls disciplinary action and responds to injuries and interference that cannot be reduced to a coordinate.
Those decisions depend on sequence and judgment.
Sometimes the correct call is to stop the game immediately.
Sometimes the correct call is to wait two seconds.
A system can detect that a rule may have been broken. It cannot always determine which action best protects fairness, safety, and the flow of the contest at the same time.
That is not inefficiency.
That is officiating.
The New Referee Needs Different Skills
The future official is not a less important human standing beside a more important machine.
It is a different job.
The referee of 2026 has to understand what the system measures, what it ignores, and how confident its output really is. That official needs to recognize a technical failure, apply the manual fallback, communicate an automated decision, and explain why the rule produced an outcome that may look wrong to players or spectators.
They also need the confidence to reject the false certainty of a screen.
Technology vendors tend to focus on accuracy rates. Sports organizations need to focus just as seriously on authority, escalation, system logs, review limits, communication, and accountability.
Who can override the system?
What happens when the cameras disagree?
Which calls are factual, and which remain subjective?
Who explains the decision?
Who signs the match report when the software fails?
Those questions are not secondary to the product.
They are the product.
Will AI Replace Human Referees in Sports?
- AI can automate line calls, ball tracking, and objective decisions.
- Human refs still judge intent, contact, safety, misconduct, and exceptions.
- In 2026, the strongest model is assistance, not full replacement.
Human Refs Are Moving Up the Decision Chain
Ball tracking will keep improving. Line calling will become cheaper and reach smaller tournaments, local clubs, and youth competition. Rule-verification systems will check more events automatically and produce answers faster than a referee crew can meet and discuss them.
For amateur and youth leagues, the story runs differently. Most clubs will never pay for twelve-camera arrays or a review official on every court, so the measurable calls will stay with a volunteer parent, a weekend official, or a single local referee for years yet. What automation changes there is the expectation: players and spectators now measure every close call against what they see on television, which leaves the human official defending decisions against a standard the technology set but never handed them.
The repetitive calls will continue moving to machines.
Good.
Human attention should not be wasted on work that a tested system can perform more consistently.
But the remaining work will not be ceremonial. Officials will handle context, intent, safety, misconduct, exceptions, communication, escalation, and final authority. They will be responsible for the exact moments when measurement is not enough.
The future referee may make fewer calls.
The calls they do make will matter more.
Before automating another call, write the fallback protocol: who stops play, who explains a failure, who may override the system, and who owns the final decision. The machine may own the boundary. The human must still own the consequences.
